So good to hear from you! Yes, this is quite a coincidence. My AFS experience was in 1961, and I left Bremen for home on August 13, the day the wall went up in Berlin! I never dreamed then, nor did I indicate it at all in my trip journal, that that wall would stay up as long as it did!

I lived with a family in Ravensburg who spoke no English, which turned out to be a great experience.

Please let me know more about your AFS experience in Idaho.

I live in Jasper, Dubois County, Indiana and have recently become fascinated with the life and work of Herbert Jogerst. His work is exceptional. What I find intriguing is the fact that he came from the village of Wagshurst, in northern Baden. In the mid 1800s, roughly 30 to 40 families from Wagshurst, comprising 180 or so individuals, settled in Jasper, which is only twenty or so miles from St. Meinrad, where Jogerst did much of his work. I wonder if he ever discovered he had so many distant cousins living just a few miles away.

My uncle Lloyd Diefenderfer owned the farm that the Army used for expanding the Camp Reynolds base into a POW camp. There was 1800 german prisoners at the camp from 1942-1945. When the war ended the Army sold the POW barracks (about 12 by 24 housing 16 prisoners) to the local people for $25 each. My grandfather bought 3 or 4 to use as storage sheds.Many of ther prisoners who earned the trust of the jailers were loaned to the local farmers and nusinessmen as day laborers.There was only one escape of prisoners that I know of. Two of them escaped to the town of Sharpsville, about 10 miles away, and were captured after a homeowner heard them on the roof or her house trying to break a window and enter.

Werner Friedrich Meier's grave was moved when they closed Camp Butner to the Chattanooga National Cemetery. If you look in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Nationwide Gravesite Locator he is listed. Sadly, the person that entered the data listed him as a 1SGT US Air Force. The cemetery has him listed right on their locator card. His marker is also correct, Section PostC site 40-3.

The Monroe Journal newspaper on July 14, 1944 had the following:

Camp Sutton authorities said that a German prisoner was killed Tuesday while attempting to excape. He was working near Van Wyck with a squad of prisoners cutting pulp wood, with two Camp Soldiers on guard. He broke away and began running. The guards ordered a halt and he hesitated, then went on, and was shot and killed. His name was Warner Fredrick Meier, and he held the rank of sergeant in the Luftwaffe.

Please send me copies of the newspaper articles. The history of Camp Sutton, NC is a hobby of mine.
